LGBTQ in 2021 is dedicated to ensuring that our diverse community is represented in New York City government by electing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and gender non-conforming people to the City Council. In 2021, all five LGBTQ members of the New York City Council will leave office due to term limits. Through education, awareness building, mentoring and networking, LGBTQ in 2021 will recruit and support candidates for City Council across New York City.
When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.
- Audre Lorde
Presently, there are five openly gay members of the New York City Council, all of whom will leave office after 2021 due to term limits. Faced with the unacceptable prospect of having no LGBTQ Council members and Caucus in the Council’s next term, LGBTQ in 2021 is committed to ensuring that diverse communities are represented by electing candidates across the spectrum of sexual orientation, gender identity, expression or presentation.
A Concerted Effort
LGBTQ in 2021 will work to identify candidates for City Council and connect them with essential training, education, key resources and networking opportunities.
